The Maria Island camping ground is located on Maria Island, Tasmania’s only island national park. Maria Island National Park is 6 kilometres off the east coast of the small town of Triabunna and app. 90 minutes drive north east of Hobart (90 kilometres). The Island is accessed by a 20-minute ferry service that departs from Triabunna. Maria Island boast a large camping ground and is close to the ruins of Darlington, being a 19th century convict settlement. There are a good range of level sites that line each side of Bernacchi’s Creek. The campground has a number of fireplaces, but portable stoves are recommended. Tank water is provided; other facilities include toilets, gold coin-operated showers, a visitor information centre and park ranger’s office.

Bookings are not required for camping Maria Island however they are recommended if you require bunkhouse accommodation Please note camping fees do apply. There are no shops or cars on Maria Island, however mountain bikes are popular and a great way to explore the Park. You can take your bike across on the ferry. You can camp at free sites at French's Farm and Encampment Cove, which are between three and four hours’ walk from Darlington. Basic accommodation can be booked in the Old Penitentiary at Darlington. Most penitentiary rooms have six bunks and are equipped with a fireplace and table with bench seating. There is also a larger space with bunks for 14 people. All rooms open on to a large verandah with sweeping views of the historic Darling precinct.
